JOA and Mac OS X

Requirements: Known Issues:

The Apple Java Virtual Machine (JVM) is still a work in progress as of version 10.2.1 of Mac OS X. A stable, up-to-date Java implementation will probably be available sometime in the first calendar quarter of 2003.
  1. Performance: JOA can run significantly slower under Mac OS X compared to Mac OS 9 and other operating systems--especially with respect to graphics performance. This is primarily due to incompatabilities between JOA and the Apple JVM with "hardware acceleration" enabled (Apple uses features of your Mac's display hardware to increase graphics performance.) Apple is aware of the problem (broken XOR drawing) but it is hard to predict when it will be fixed. For this reason, JOA turns off hardware acceleration when it starts up. Graphics performance is degraded but JOA functions pretty much as expected.

  2. Broken Linked Browsing: Under certain conditions, the linked browsing feature of JOA will quit working. This appears to be a problem in the Apple JVM but more reserach is needed to pinpoint the source of the problem. This problem only seems to occur after you have made a map using the etopo-derived, filled background bathymetry. The work around is to disable this feature when you produce map plots. As an alternative, the isobath contour line options works as expected.
